85/15% Lifestyle

I’m not an extremist who thinks we should all sew our own clothes and eat only what we produce ourselves. I believe in affecting change through moderation. This is where my 85%/15% lifestyle comes into play. I aim to be healthy 85% of the time, reserving 15% for some vitamin J: junk.

When my kids were young I was more extreme—no sugar, preservatives, soda, TV—even juice was mostly forbidden. I developed my 85%/15% philosophy one day in the car when my kids were around four and seven. I overheard them saying that as soon as they moved out of the house they were going to buy ice cream, a giant bag of Doritos, and sit around and watch TV all day. This is when I realized the importance of moderation. We stopped at the store and I bought them ice cream and Doritos. When we got home I let them watch TV. They were in pure shock and joy.

Everyone’s definitions of “healthy” and “junk” are different. For some, healthy might be eating organic, for others it might mean going for a walk every day. Junk may be dyeing your hair, for others it might mean eating fast food. And the numbers aren’t an exact science. Eighty-five percent may be too high or two low for you. All I am advocating is that everyone find their comfort zone with and try to stick to it. If everyone commits to some type of change, together we can make a difference for both our own health and that of the planet.

Even with your good intentions and comfort zone in mind, it can still be hard to find products that fit within your ideals. This is where we come in. Sumbody products aren’t just for those committed to having zero chemical exposures, but also for those striving to lessen their chemical load. You don’t have to be a diehard to want to make informed choices. My goal is to bolster anyone and everyone searching for healthy alternatives, empowering them to discover what truly harmonizes with their lifestyle.
