Debbi’s Delicious Chai

Chai is simple to make at home and can be stored for a good amount of time. It also makes a wonderful DIY gift in a glass jar with a homemade tag. Drink it hot in the winter and iced in the summer.

For an extra-skin loving treat add 1/4 teaspoon of brewed chai to 1 tablespoon of any Sumbody body scrub. Use after mixing or store in the fridge.

Spicy

  • 7 pink peppercorns
  • 2 tablespoons ginger (I like it spicy!)
  • 7 cardamom pods
  • 2 cloves
  • 1/4 teaspoon nutmeg, cut and sifted
  • 2 cinnamon sticks

Sweet

  • 2 tablespoons dried orange rind
  • 1 tablespoon carob or 2 tablespoons cocoa nibs
  • 1/2 vanilla bean

Base

  • 1/2 cup rooibos tea
  • 1/4 cup honeybush tea

Neutral taste in small amounts, but beneficial

  • 1/2 stick astragalus root
  • 1 teaspoon burdock root, cut and sifted
  • 1/8 teaspoon turmeric, cut and sifted
  • 8 goji berries

If storing, make sure all ingredients are dried. If you want a fresh cup or to brew a large, fresh batch and keep in the fridge (up to 1 week) you can use fresh ingredients. Please note using powders is not suggested. It is harder to strain out at the end. When buying the ingredients (all are easy to find on the internet) buy cut and sifted.

Mix all dry ingredients and store in a glass jar. When ready, use 1/2 tablespoon to 2 cups of water and simmer in a pot with a lid. When the tea is strong it’s ready. Pour over strainer into mug. You can add any milk and a touch of sweetener of your choice. Use this completed mixture, milk and sweetener included, to blend into your scrub.
